Download detailed brochure here

Business & Decision in collaboration with the Radboud Management University in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) developed a unique course where exploiting the commercial value of data is central

The 2 day workshop, geared at data scientists, BI managers, business analysts and project managers trains people to ask the right questions from a business perspective, judge data for its relevance and to translate it into innovative practices for the organization.

We now offer this unique, compact and intensive seminar, given by a professor business management, a fraud analytics entrepreneur, an information management consultant, and a big data practice leader at the European Data Innovation Hub.

The new extended understanding that the training offers, will make you the asset that every manager requests in his team. Someone who can support fact-based decision making to maximize profit in our resurgent economy.

Also available as a 8-day Executive Masterclass in Belgium later this autumn.

2 Day Executive Course

What is a Business Data Scientist?

A Business Data Scientist is a role with three core skills:

  • The ability to perform business-relevant analyses on the available data given his/her knowledge of the business. These analyses will then yield knowledge that is relevant to business operations. This component mainly concerns business thinking, i.e. of – the application of - business models, in addition to the ability to quickly become familiar with industry knowledge.
  • The ability to collect, analyse and make accessible data using modern technology. Technology and applications are undergoing drastic developments at the moment (technologies like Hadoop, R etc.). This component concerns the ability to recognise relevant technologies, become familiar with these and apply them.
  • The ability to make the knowledge produced actionable by bringing it to the attention of decision-makers the right way (in terms of format, time and communication method). This component especially concerns the social and interactive capabilities of the business data scientist.

A Unique Vision

The course Business Data Scientist is based on a model with three axes:

  • First, the functional axis of data science. How do you determine the need for information (direction), how do you then collect and analyse the relevant data (collection and analysis), how do you process the data into relevant propositions (interpretation and processing) and how do you then make these propositions actionable (distribution).
  • Next, the social-organizational axis. Each of the functional activities is performed in a social and organizational context in which clients and other stakeholders have an interest. How do you deal with these interests and how do you ensure that the propositions you create as a Business Data Scientist will actually “land” in the business?
  • And finally, the instrumental axis. In order to perform your functional activities and achieve your social-organizational goals you need tools. How do you get the relevant parties involved in the directing activities early on? How do you ensure that the results of the interpretation and the processing are sufficiently easy to grasp and sufficiently appealing for the business. But also: what are the available technologies for the retrieval and analysis of particular types of data? The course will not focus in detail on analytical techniques or coding skills, but rather provide you an overview of different methods to approach certain business problems.

Who should attend?

  • BI managers,
  • Project managers Data Science/Big Data projects

Day 1

Module 1: The science of data science

This module focuses on the context of data science. In 2015 data is an important production factor for organizations and as such it must be organized in a dedicated manner. The foundations of data science will be dealt with: What are data, information, knowledge and intelligence? And how do these relate to each other?

What is data science? A process-based approach of data science will offer the student a grip on his or her professional domain.

Module 2: Data Analytics

This module will focus on data, data-analysis and tooling. We will look at different types of data, the process of data processing, different types of analyses, tools and applications.

We will discuss choices to be made: when do you use which technique. Different ‘levels of maturity’ are distinguished in this respect. We will also look at the ethics of data processing and the use of data

Day 2

Module 3 - Business analytics and Tactics of the Data scientist

This module will focus on the role of business models in information and analysis processes. From an information science perspective, the role of (theoretic) models will be discussed and illustrated by means of practical examples. How can information or knowledge be produced using models? In addition, relevant business models will be looked into. First, we chose to look at models that offer a ‘strategic’ perspective on the organization. Thus, models will be discussed that are used for internal (product portfolio) analysis, as well as models that are suited for external (environmental) analyses. As in the other modules, the acquired knowledge will be applied to the case straight away where participants will present their case to the Board.
